Screening Companies for Possible UTUC Assistance
The University of Tennessee University Center (UTUC) is a program
within UT CIS that is designed to assist companies in Targeted
Rural Areas (TRA) as defined by The State of Manufacturing
in Tennessee report (2005) authored by the UT Center for Business
and Economic Research. The UTUC is funded by the Economic
Development Administration and economic development is the focus.
Services Offered
UTUC can provide the following types of support to companies in
TRA:
- Competitiveness Assessment
UT CIS
staff will conduct competitive assessments to determine what
type of assistance a company actually needs. UTUC can be charged
for one or two days of time for a CIS resource to assess the
company on-site and to provide that company a brief written report.
- Direct Technical Assistance
UTUC may
underwrite part of the cost of technical assistance delivered
to a company. Types of technical assistance include lean manufacturing,
quality systems, human performance technology, supply chain logistics,
government procurement processes, occupational safety and environmental
health and safety.
- SBIR Proposal Assistance
UTUC will
provide specialized technical assistance for Phase 1, Phase 2
or Phase 2 Plus SBIR/STTR proposals in targeted locations in
the state.
- New Product Development Center
UTUC, through
the NPDCC, will provide technical and product development assistance
to individuals or companies that are in the process of bringing
a new product to market or commercializing an existing or new
technology.
- Training
UTUC will market, develop and deliver
training on topics designed to assist companies with economic
development. Topics may include proposal writing or technology
training on topics such as nanotechnology and radio frequency
identification.
Impact Criteria
In order to qualify for UTUC assistance a company must be able
to predict significant economic impacts as a result of the UTUC
assistance. Such impacts include: increased sales, increased employment,
higher average wages per employee or avoided costs.
