UT CIS has recently welcomed two accomplished professionals to the team!Tintin Czach, the Tennessee Certified Economic Developer (TCED) program's new Program Director, brings with her a background as a transportation manager for economic development at the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Her extensive experience also spans roles in entertainment and special events with Gaylord Opryland Resort and Caesars Entertainment Corporation in Las Vegas. Tintin holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from the Mapua Institute of Technology in The Philippines, contributing a unique blend of skills and insights to UT CIS.Mia Miceli, the newest member of the Tennessee Manufacturing Extension Partnership (TMEP) team at UT CIS, serves as a Content Marketing Specialist. Mia's journey with UT CIS started in January 2022 as a marketing student worker, culminating in her transition to a full-time role within the TMEP program in December 2023. A recent graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Mia earned a Bachelor of Science in public relations with a minor in business administration in May 2023.As we embrace Tintin and Mia's wealth of experience, their contributions promise to enrich UT CIS's collaborative and innovative culture. The Philip Trauernicht Annual Scholarship was created in memoriam of Philip Trauernicht. A native Tennessean, Philip spent three decades dedicating his career to economic and community development throughout Tennessee. His service and dedication supported the creation of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of investment across the state’s 95 counties. He worked closely with communities and industry to get much needed resources to rural and distressed areas of Tennessee. He was known for his unwavering fairness, honesty, wry sense of humor and willingness to mentor, especially those new to economic development. Philip was a true servant of the people, and he is greatly missed by all who knew him. Informed and innovative leadership in a community is critical to it achieving economic vitality. We know rural communities in Tennessee face unique challenges and require leaders who understand the building blocks of economic and community development and are able to work collaboratively to leverage the strengths and assets of their community to improve the quality of life for all residents. The Philip Trauernicht Memorial Scholarship for Rural Leaders enhances the development of rural leadership through scholarship support to the Tennessee Basic Economic Development Course (TBEDC).This scholarship provides full tuition to attend the annual Tennessee Basic Economic Development Course (TBEDC) and up to four nights’ lodging during the course. The award value per annual scholarship is approximately $1,800.Criteria for Award Selection -- Preference will be given to scholarship applicants who meet the following criteria:Applicants who are engaged in the practice of economic and community development in rural counties or regions in Tennessee;Applicants with limited resources to support professional development training, and who would be unable to attend the TBEDC without scholarship support;Applicants who are new to the practice of economic and community development, and who have less than five years of work experience in the profession;Applicants who demonstrate a passion and commitment to applying the knowledge gained through attending the TBEDC to advance rural development in Tennessee;Applicants who are members of the Tennessee Economic Development Council or will commit to TEDC membership after completing TBEDC. The University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services (UT CIS) recently graduated the 18th class of its Tennessee Certified Economic Developer (TCED) Program. This cohort brings the total number of Tennessee certified economic developers to 106. “We are thrilled to have crossed the threshold of 100 Certified Economic Developers in Tennessee” said UT CIS Economic Development Director Kim Denton. “This is a significant milestone in helping communities across the state be better prepared for economic growth.”Graduation was held at the IPS Training Center in Nashville. Graduates presented their Capstone Projects, which is the final requirement to achieve the TCEcD designation. TCED candidates completed a week-long Basic Economic Development Course and a series of six core courses pertinent to economic and community development for a total of 92 instructional hours. The TCED Program provides participants a broad-based knowledge of economic trends, tools and core components required to compete in today’s global economy. The Fall 2023 TCED graduates are: Kimberly Anderson, a grant writer with Monroe County Government. Her project title was Utilizing Main Street to Encourage Downtown Revitalization.John Bamber, former executive director of Rhea County Economic & Tourism Council. His project title was Worth the Climb – Diversifying Outdoor Recreational Tourism in a Rural Community.Kelsey Dansby, development coordinator with the Tennessee Central Economic Authority. Her project title was Economic Impact of a Port in Rural Middle Tennessee.Autumn Derrick, East Tennessee regional apprenticeship director for Apprenticeship Tennessee. Her project title was Selling Your Workforce Story in a Tight Labor Market.Christian Gullott, executive director for government affairs for Bridgestone Americas, Inc. His project title was Spring into Action: A Global Mobility Solutions/Manufacturing Company’s Site Selection & Strategic Investment in the Future of EVs.Jordan McKenzie, former principal planner with Memphis/Shelby County. His project title was Working While It’s Day: Economic Development and the Black Church Influence in Tennessee.Amy Napoli, senior economic and community development officer for the Greater Nashville Regional Council. Her project title was An Analysis of Barriers to Employment and Wraparound Services in Northern Middle Tennessee. John Rose, economic development director for the city of Kingsport. His project title was Infill Development on a Brownfield Site – the city of Kingsport.Sarah Shelby, business retention and expansion specialist for the city of LaVergne. Her project title was Economic Development through Educational Partnership: Creating a Future Workforce. “All of our Tennessee certified economic developers made a serious commitment to achieve this designation,” Denton said. “They now will be able to use this in-depth knowledge to benefit their communities and regions.” New graduates will be invited to join the TCED Alumni Group, which provides continuing education and networking opportunities several times throughout the year. Lori will be directly overseeing program operations and delivery, program administration, training and event logistics management, business development, and customer communications. Her position as Economic Development Specialist leads all day-to-day operational aspects within their area and provides advanced program support for the UT CIS Economic Development team, which provides professional development training, technical assistance and community capacity building to economic and community development organizations across Tennessee. The UT Center for Industrial Services (UT CIS) is excited to begin the search for our next Economic Development Program Manager.
The Economic Development Program Manager provides leadership for UT CIS programs that deliver training and consulting services to economic development organizations, communities, businesses and industry.
In this role, the Program Manager develops and maintains relationships with funding agencies and professional associations; ensures that grant and program certification requirements are met; and identifies and pursues new funding sources.
The position works with team members to deliver economic and workforce development programs, including the Tennessee Certified Economic Developer (TCED) Program; provides instructional and consulting services to clients; and works with team members and other IPS and CIS teams to effectively market services.

Congratulations to Kim Denton on her new role as Director of Economic Development for UT CIS! She began her new position on May 1.
“I am excited about the future of UT CIS and how our economic and workforce development programs are positively impacting communities across the state. I am energized by the opportunities for growth and look forward to contributing to our success," says Kim.
Denton brings impressive economic development experience, an extensive professional network, and a strong public service ethic to the position. She has been UT CIS’ TCED Director since 2016 where she grew the program while maintaining its quality reputation. During this period, she also headed the UT EDA University Center and served a term as UT CIS’ Team Culture chair.
Before joining UT CIS, Kim served as Associate Director of Corporate and Foundation Development for the UTK Haslam College of Business (2014-16) and President of the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce (1998-2014).
“We’re excited that Kim is moving into the Director role at this important time in our state’s economic development,” said Paul Jennings, CIS Executive Director. "As our national and state economy grows and transitions, we need to redouble our efforts to provide the best possible training for Tennessee economic development and workforce development professionals. We must also continue to find better ways to leverage university resources to address community challenges and opportunities. Kim has the expertise and experience to make this happen.”

The University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services (UT CIS) recently graduated class 17 of its Tennessee Certified Economic Developer (TCEcD) Program. This cohort brings the total number of Tennessee certified economic developers to 97!
Graduation was held at the IPS Polk Avenue Training Suite in Nashville. During the session, the graduates presented their Capstone projects, the final requirement for certification. TCED candidates completed a week-long Basic Economic Development Course in addition to a series of six core courses pertinent to economic and community development. The TCED Program gives participants a broad-based knowledge of economic trends, tools and core components required to compete in today’s global economy.
The Spring 2023 TCED graduates are:
Shannon Cantrell, CEO of the Livingston Overton County Chamber of Commerce. Her Capstone topic was Public Art as an Economic Driver in Rural Tennessee.
Lauren Fletcher, executive director of the Covington-Tipton County Chamber of Commerce. Her Capstone topic was the Benefits of a United Approach for a County in Economic & Community Development Efforts.
Michael Foster, Anderson County commissioner. His Capstone topic was Economic Development of Rural Communities through Tourism and Downtown Revitalization.
Trevor Hobbs, assistant to the town administrator in Farragut. His Capstone topic was Developing the Town of Farragut’s Economic Development Strategic Plan.
Tara Wilson, assistant director of the Paris-Henry County Industrial Committee. Her Capstone topic was Employability Counts: Implementing Workforce Development in Grades 3-12.
“All of our Tennessee certified economic developers made a serious commitment to achieve this designation,” said Kim Denton, director of the TCED Program. “They now will be able to use this in-depth knowledge to benefit their communities and regions.”
New graduates will be invited to join the TCED Alumni Group, which provides continuing education and networking opportunities several times throughout the year.

Created in 2016 by International Economic Development Council (IEDC), the largest international professional trade association for economic developers, Economic Development Week aims to increase awareness for local programs that create jobs, advance career development opportunities, and improve the quality of life in communities everywhere.
The University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services (UT CIS) marks the week of May 8 to May 12, 2023 as the next Economic Development Week. During this week, Tennessee joins communities across North America will celebrate and recognize the contributions made by professional economic developers to create more economically vibrant and livable communities.
“As local and regional economies evolve, the role of economic developers and development organizations are crucial in energizing, preparing, and promoting local economic growth,” says IEDC President & CEO Nathan Ohle. “The 2023 Economic Development Week will recognize, distinguish, and show appreciation for the innovation and leadership of our community leaders building an equitable, sustainable, resilient, and inclusive future. I hope communities everywhere will join us in celebrating the accomplishments and important work economic developers perform in their communities year-round.”
UT CIS will proudly host the Tennessee Basic Economic Development Course (TBEDC) in Nashville during Economic Development Week. Accredited by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), TBEDC focuses on the fundamental concepts, strategies and tools needed to be successful in today's complex economic environment. Topics include a basic overview of strategic planning, finance, workforce development, business retention and expansion, small business development and entrepreneurship, marketing and attraction, ethics and community development, among others.

The Tennessee Certified Economic Developer (TCED) Program at the University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services (UT CIS) is excited to offer a new TCED elective this February.
Embracing Generational & Cultural Differences is a 4-hour interactive elective that has been designed to explore strategies for embracing and appreciating cultural differences as well as centering communication across generations as a bridge for relationship building, productivity and innovation in the workplace.
This session will explore how centering communication differences across generations can serve as a bridge for relationship building, productivity and innovation. Join this interactive experience as we demystify our unique communication superpowers within. Course participants will also engage in an interactive experience exploring the root cause of implicit bias. We will take a look at local demographics to understand cultural trends, followed by tangible action items for moving beyond just working across lines of difference and into genuine appreciation of these differences.
Erika R. Burnett, MEd, will be leading this virtual TCED training. Burnett is the Diversity, Inclusion & Intercutural Communications Instructor for the Tennessee Language Center. Erika is the founder and principal trainer for The Burnett Group, LLC whose mission is to inspire professionals, deepen impact, and challenge the status quo of service delivery in Middle TN and surrounding areas. She enjoys serving as a master trainer, consultant, and facilitator across a variety of topics including strategic planning and board development, civic engagement, youth development, leadership exploration, and understanding and working across lines of difference.
Erika alongside Co-Conspirator Nicole Kemp, launched the Women of Color Collaborative. The Collaborative serves as an intentional incubator for women , curating supportive spaces and opportunities for collaborators to work, play and build together while centering their identity.

The TCED Program, administered by UT CIS, provides high-quality training, continuing education and professional development opportunities to Tennessee's economic and community development practitioners, community leaders and elected officials.
The TCED Program gives participants a broad-based knowledge of economic opportunities and trends, core components and tools required to compete in today’s global economy, with a focus on economic development in Tennessee.
