ISO 45001: A Pathway to Improve Resiliency

Resilience is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties.” One way your facility can have the capacity to recover is to be prepared.
ISO 45001, the international standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, requires organizations to identify hazards, risks, and opportunities, and then take appropriate action to address those issues.
Organizations are also required under ISO 45001 to develop emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Monitoring, measuring, performance evaluation, and training all contribute to an organization’s ability to continually improve their safety and health systems and be prepared to respond to emergencies.
Having an ISO 45001 system in place goes a long way to prepare an organization to have the capacity to recover quickly from any difficulties that may interrupt your plant operations. For more information about ISO 45001 and resiliency contact Bryan Lane at bryan.lane@tennessee.edu.

Lean and Green Assessment
UT CIS has experienced teams who apply lean analyses to manufacturing operations and identify potential environmental cost-saving opportunities: reduction in use of toxic and/or hazardous materials, reduction in raw materials, reduction in water use, energy conservation, and reduction of solid and hazardous waste generation. We will provide you with the data and assistance to help you complete the Annual Reporting of Hazardous Waste Activities.
Air Emissions Inventory Development
If you are a manufacturer that wants to construct a new facility, modify an existing facility, put in a new process or install new equipment, you may need an air permit. We help you develop a good air emissions inventory, understanding important Title V rules and help you complete fire air quality permits.
This service is an in-plant offering to our industry customers when we don't provide a training program open to all customers.
OSHA Compliance Audits & Assistance
UT CIS will review your OSHA-required written and training programs and conduct a “mock” OSHA audit/walk around of your facility. A written report will detail the findings as well as the pertinent OSHA standard citations for any hazards or violations found during the walk around and programs review. The audits and assistance are confidential.
Accident investigation
Too many people assume accidents “just happen.” Many are preventable and one way to attain a safer workplace is to conduct effective accident (and near-miss) investigations. As an OSHA Training Institute Education Center, we offer the OSHA # 7505, Introduction to Incident Investigation. This course is conducted on-site and we can use the processes taught to review your accidents and near-misses.
Developing Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP)
To prevent oil discharges in navigable waters, your facility may need an SPCC. The plan is required for industrial, commercial, agricultural or public facilities that use, store, drill for, produce, gather, refine or consume oil or oil products. Whether you have transformers or drummed oil on-site, contact us for help in developing an SPCC plan.
ISO 45001 Audits
UT CIS has a BSI-certified ISO 45001 Lead Auditor ready to assist you as you progress through the process of meeting the ISO 45001 standard requirements. Whether you are just beginning that journey, or have an established and functioning safety and health management system, we can provide auditing and consultation services to help you move forward. We can also assist with your internal training needs.
ISO 14000/EMS Development
The ISO 14001 environmental management standard is a mandated requirement in the automotive sector if you are a Tier I supplier and has become a significant barrier for new suppliers interested in working with Tier I suppliers or attempting to become one themselves. UT CIS provides EMS training, implementation, auditing, and preparation for registration. The training includes excellent reference materials to help personnel understand EMS elements, the benefits, and the steps necessary to create a successful and compliant system.

Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) Audits
If it rains on any of your industrial activities, you may need a stormwater permit. There are many industrial sectors with specific requirements. We can help you develop a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPP), help you audit and update your SWPP, help you file permits and provide training on-site.
Solid and Hazardous Waste Reduction Assessments
Sometimes solid or hazardous waste can be recycled and recovered, and sometimes it must be disposed of in an environmentally conscious manner. Regardless, waste can be viewed as a detractor to the bottom line profitability of an Your organization must not only pay the going rate for a materials they bought and did not use in the product but also pay for its disposal as this waste. UT CIS can help you identify where your waste is and how you can proactively work to eliminate it.

UT CIS Offers First Virtual OSHA 10-Hour Training

UT CIS OSHA Consultant Bryan Lane presented an OSHA 10 course on July 24th, 2020, but this training was unique in that it was Lane’s first time delivering the course virtually.
“I did not know what to expect,” says Lane of the training. “We conducted the training using Zoom from the UT CIS Nashville training room. The customer, Panolam, joined in from their Morristown, TN and Auburn, ME facilities.”
OSHA 10 is traditionally an in-person training that provides workers and safety supervisors with an opportunity to discuss how the facility’s safety culture can help avoid some of OSHA’s most cited safety violations in a confidential environment. It's particularly useful for those who are just entering the safety field and would like a better understanding of what is required and where to start. Course subject matter covers the following topics:
An introduction to OSHA
OSHAct/General Duty Clause
Inspections, citations and penalties
Means of egress and fire protection
An overview of workers’ rights
How to identify common hazards
How to correct some common safety and health problems
Certain subjects have been added to the curriculum in the past few months to address the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, including new health and safety COVID-19 implications in a participant’s current facility and safe work practices.
The online training provides an option that is flexible and permits facilities to schedule an OSHA 10-hour training program that accommodates their facility production schedules. Lane can additionally provide a virtual walk-around audit for workers and supervisors in companies with multiple locations nationwide.
This virtual offering will not be the new standard for UT CIS OSHA courses, though. An online OSHA 10 training is only available to participants when a facility will not allow visitors in - such as the trainer - or the employees are not allowed to travel. Lane explains, “the exception requests are not to be granted solely for convenience – rather because of the COVID-19 travel restrictions.”
Online or in-person, Lane and the UT CIS team have worked hard to ensure that all Health, Safety & Emergency Preparedness courses are delivered in the most effective way possible while ensuring the safety of the participants and the instructor. Lane explains that this virtual OSHA 10-hour training continues to provide the same valuable curriculum as its in-person counterpart and allows participants the opportunity to talk about their concerns with an experienced safety and health consultant.

OSHA awards grants on a competitive basis through its Susan Harwood Training Grant Program. Harwood helped develop OSHA standards to protect workers while working in the agency in the early, important years from 1980-1997. This year, the Center for Industrial Services was awarded one of these grants to provide training and education programs for employers and workers on recognition, avoidance, and prevention of safety and health hazards in their workplaces.
“We are confident that we helped workers stay safe with our good existing training programs," says Health and Safety program manager Walter Idol. "When these workers are called upon to clean up hazardous materials from big weather events like hurricanes and tornadoes, it is important that they stay safe. We have also provided a valuable service to the agencies responsible for managing these disasters."
OSHA began awarding training grants in 1978. Since that time, approximately $205 million dollars has been awarded to approximately 1,000 non-profit organizations to provide training on a variety of safety and health topics. Click HERE to learn about the impact that the Susan Harwood Training Grant Program has had across the United States.
This year, Walter Idol, Chuck Gluck, and Bryan Lane, UT CIS’ safety trainers, have trained 1050 workers in Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
