The Tennessee Certified Economic Developer (TCED) Program at the University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services (UT CIS) is excited to offer a new TCED elective this February.
Embracing Generational & Cultural Differences is a 4-hour interactive elective that has been designed to explore strategies for embracing and appreciating cultural differences as well as centering communication across generations as a bridge for relationship building, productivity and innovation in the workplace.
This session will explore how centering communication differences across generations can serve as a bridge for relationship building, productivity and innovation. Join this interactive experience as we demystify our unique communication superpowers within. Course participants will also engage in an interactive experience exploring the root cause of implicit bias. We will take a look at local demographics to understand cultural trends, followed by tangible action items for moving beyond just working across lines of difference and into genuine appreciation of these differences.
Erika R. Burnett, MEd, will be leading this virtual TCED training. Burnett is the Diversity, Inclusion & Intercutural Communications Instructor for the Tennessee Language Center. Erika is the founder and principal trainer for The Burnett Group, LLC whose mission is to inspire professionals, deepen impact, and challenge the status quo of service delivery in Middle TN and surrounding areas. She enjoys serving as a master trainer, consultant, and facilitator across a variety of topics including strategic planning and board development, civic engagement, youth development, leadership exploration, and understanding and working across lines of difference.
Erika alongside Co-Conspirator Nicole Kemp, launched the Women of Color Collaborative. The Collaborative serves as an intentional incubator for women , curating supportive spaces and opportunities for collaborators to work, play and build together while centering their identity.

The TCED program provides both new and seasoned economic development professionals with valuable resources through practical information, best practices, knowledgeable subject matter experts, and a supportive peer network. The time and cost investment along with TN only locations make this program more accessible than other economic development training programs. The TCED program was a great experience for me!

As the Community Development Director for Tennessee, the tools I acquired through the high-quality training provided by the University of Tennessee’s Center for Industrial Services (UTCIS) continue to serve me in my role. Through several of our initiatives, we encourage local elected officials as well as other economic and community development professionals across the state to take part in this well designed, valuable training.

I am very proud of the TCEcD designation I earned with the help of the UT CIS program. The final Capstone Project was challenging. The program gave me a broad and detailed understanding of Economic Development and how to run a professional organization. The process led to many valuable connections with whom I regularly work.

After 4 years of college and 38 years of leadership & management classes in the military, these classes are the best that I have ever experienced. The information that I have gleaned from these courses is, and will be, paying dividends to our community for a long time.

Thinking about why I enrolled in the TCED program and the timeline since then, I remembered that this initiative resulted in my seeking and gaining appointment to the Fayette County Industrial Development Board. In particular, John Lannom's presentation was excellent, and the finance course under Toby Rittner very germane. Mark Mamantov's presentations were dynamic and enlightening. This is to say again that, the TCED program has created an excellent body of contacts, knowledge, and thought for me.
